PhD Project: A Grammar of Spiti

My PhD project aims at writing a grammar of the dialect of Spiti Bhoti spoken in the village of Tabo in Spiti valley in North India. Spiti Bhoti is an undescribed Tibetic variety within the Bodish subgroup of the Tibeto-Burman language family.

The project will focus on analyzing various morphosyntactic structures of the Tabo dialect based on data consisting of lists of nouns and verbs with example sentences, elicited for the Comparative Dictionary of Tibetan Dialects and kindly provided to me by Veronika Hein, who had gathered the data on several field trips to Spiti in the late 90s / early 2000s. As a further basis for research, I have been collecting natural data with the help of a speaker from Tabo who lives in Basel, Switzerland.
