Bachelor’s and Master’s study programs in Linguistics
The Linguistics study program in Bern consists of a unique combination of courses in General Linguistics and Historical Linguistics, where one of the two courses of study must be chosen as a special qualification. Depending on the focus, one or more (non-)Indo-European languages are taught. Linguistics covers all areas of human language(s), from structure to history to relationships (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, language change, typology, reconstruction, areal linguistics), from meaning to use to social anchoring (semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics).
BA minor study program in Chinese Language and Society
The Cultural Studies BA minor program (30 ECTS credits) “Chinese Language and Society” consists of a basic course in the modern Chinese language and a basic training in Chinese history, culture and society. This is supplemented by thematic specialisation modules and a summer school (intensive language course). The minor subject is suitable for all students who are interested in the Chinese language and society or who are planning to study in China.
MA study program in Sociolinguistics
The Institute of Linguistics is involved in the Master study program in Sociolinguistics at the Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS).
